NJ Property Taxes Rise 2.4 Percent

Property taxes in New Jersey rose 2.4 percent in 2011 despite a 2 percent cap imposed by Gov. Chris Christie and the Legislature.

The average bill increased by $183 to $7,759, down from a 4.1 percent between 2009 and 2010.

Figures obtained from the Community Affairs Department by New Jersey Press Media show Paterson had the highest property tax increase at 17.3 percent for municipalities with more than 250 residents.

Atlantic County’s Corbin City had the biggest drop at 20.6 percent, where homeowners paid an average of $3,328 in property taxes.

Some property owners statewide received rebates that averaged $240.
