NJ Probes Fatal Shooting By State Trooper
New Jersey authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Irvington who allegedly pointed a handgun at state troopers.
Newark resident Dawud Alexander was pronounced dead at about 7:40 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities say the state police's weapons trafficking unit got information that someone was in possession of two weapons. When they approached Alexander, he fled and dropped a weapon later determined to be a stun gun.
Detectives say they followed Alexander into a backyard in Irvington and that he appeared to point a handgun at them.
One detective fired at Alexander and stuck him in the upper body. Investigators recovered a loaded revolver at the scene.
The attorney general's office is investigating the incident.
