FREDON TOWNSHIP — A 40-year-old Stillwater man with several previous DWI convictions was arrested following a traffic stop Friday for driving a vehicle while suspended.

New Jersey State Police say troopers in Sussex County had been on the lookout for Peter C. Fawcett after learning that, despite previous DWI convictions and a license suspension, he was still seen driving around the area. On Friday at 9:49 a.m., Trooper II David Thomas observed Fawcett driving southbound on State Highway 94 in Fredon Township.

During the course of a motor vehicle stop at milepost 17.1, the trooper confirmed that Gawcett's license was still suspended due to previous DWI convictions. He was placed under arrest and charged with driving while suspended, according to a statement from NJ State Police. Fawcett was later transported to Sussex County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail with a 10 percent option.

"Typically, when someone is charged with driving while suspended, it is considered a traffic violation and placed on a traffic summons like a speeding ticket, not a criminal complaint. In New Jersey, it is considered a criminal violation if you drive while your license has been suspended as a result of a DWI conviction," State Police said in a statement.
