Authorities say a 35-year-old Barnegat man allegedly assaulted a woman in her home while she was asleep.

Pedro A. Castillo-Valdes was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree sexual assault in connection with the April 22 incident, according to  Bergen County Acting Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.

The Lyndhurst Police Department was contacted by the female victim on the morning of April 22. She told authorities that she had been sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance while she was sleeping.

Police and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit investigated the alleged incident and determined that Castillo-Valdes had approached the woman while she was asleep in her home and sexually assaulted her. Authorities say she woke up during the assault assault.

Following the investigation, Castillo-Valdes was arrested in connection with the sexual assault. He is being held in Bergen County Jail on $100,000 with no 10 percent payment option. In addition, he is prohibited from having any contact with the victim or her family. He was also ordered to surrender his passport as a condition of bail.

His first court appearance is scheduled for April 29.
