The man was sitting on his deck in Northvale when the incident happened Thursday night.

The man called police just to report the incident, but didn't think it was anything serious.

Police Chief Vincent St. Angelo tells The Record (http://bit.ly/XMveOe ) newspaper officers thought the wound looked significant and the man was taken to a hospital. Doctors found the bullet still in his leg.

St. Angelo says the bullet may have been fired into the air and hit the victim.

Officers plan to canvass the neighborhood and hope anyone who was involved will come forward.

The man's name was not released.
