MONROE (Gloucester) — A 48-year-old man shot himself to death after shooting his girlfriend and her 9-year-old son, authorities said.

Robert Long's suicide early Friday morning capped a violent Thanksgiving holiday for him and his victims.

After they were shot, Melissa Cakmak, 41, and her son managed to flee. They are expected to survive.

Hours before Long opened fire on his girlfriend, he had been briefly in police custody after being pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said Cakmak had kicked Long out of their Poplar Lane home earlier on Thanksgiving after the two had a fight.

Later that night at another address, the two got into a physical fight, police said.

Long fled before the police arrived, but prosecutors say he was pulled over by township police and charged with DWI. He was released from custody to a relative, who prosecutors did not identify.

Cakmak then said she woke up at 1:30 a.m. Friday to find Long holding a handgun.

He shot her once in the torso and fired a second time, striking her son in his hand.

The mother and child fled the residence, which was soon surrounded by police from Franklin, Washington, Deptford and Elk townships and the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office.

A SWAT team burst into the home at 5 a.m., finding Long dead from a gunshot wound.

Long's death was one of several homicides, accidental deaths and shootings in the state over the Thanksgiving holiday.

A man was killed and his brother were injured in a shooting early Friday at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing.

A DJ was shot early Thursday in Lakewood in an attack by two robbers.

A woman was killed in a Thursday car crash in Teaneck, while a man and woman also were killed Thursday in a crash in Winslow.
