NEWARK — Police arrested a drunk driver Saturday who allegedly crashed his car into a city business, then stole the owner's phone and ran from the scene.

Hakeem O. Gayle, 22, of Maplewood, was charged with with theft, driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, criminal mischief and contempt, according to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose.

According to Ambrose, Gayle crashed a silver, 2009 Chevrolet Impala through the door of a business on Elm Road at about 9:40 p.m. Authorities say the 59-year-old business owner tried using his cell phone to take pictures of the crash scene, but Gayle grabbed the phone from him and fled the area.

As Gayle was attempting to flee, Ambrose said, he was stopped by "concerned citizens" who held him until police arrived.

Ambrose said prior to the crash, Gayle's vehicle was also involved in a hit-and-run crash at South Street and McCarter Highway at 9:33 p.m. The collision involved two other vehicles. In that incident, police say Gayle fled the scene before police arrived.

In addition to charges related to the crash, Ambrose said Gayle was also found to be in possession of suspected marijuana.
