SCOTCH PLAINS — More than a decade after 26-year-old Taji Pile was murdered, police say they have arrested and charged a South Plainfield man in connection with the man's death.

David Ghigliotty, 35, has been charged with first degree murder and twp second degree weapons charges in connection with Pile's death.

According to the Union County Prosecutor's Office, on June 22, 2004 at about 10:45 p.m., Scotch Plains police officers responded to the 1300-block of Rahway Road for a report of an injured male in the street. Rahway Road is a quiet, residential tree-lined street with no sidewalks.

Police say Pile was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Authorities from the Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Unit, which in 2008 became the Union County Homicide Task Force, conducted an investigation along with police in Plainfield and Scotch Plains police. Evidence collected by investigators led to Ghigliotty being identified as a suspect. On Wednesday, he was arrested at his South Plainfield home "without incident," the prosecutor's office said.

Ghigliotty was charged with first-degree murder and two second-degree weapons offenses. He was transported to Union County Jail and is being held on $1.5 million bail.

If convicted on the murder charge, Ghigliotty faces 30 years to life in state prison.
