BURLINGTON CITY — Police are investigating why a city resident stabbed his stepfather to death Tuesday night, prosecutors say.

Stephen J. Paul, 43, has been charged in the murder of 70-year-old Edward Williams, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor Scott Coffina said police were called to Paul's apartment on Tuesday afternoon after relatives alerted them that they believed Williams was inside. Coffina said the relative was denied access to the home but city police were allowed access, at which time they found the Westampton man with cuts on his upper body.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene and the knife police believe Paul used in the attack was found inside the home.

Paul was charged with first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Burlington County Jail. An autopsy is planned for Williams on Tuesday.
