NJ Looking at Forgiving Medical School Loans

New doctors in New Jersey could have their medical school loans forgiven if they practice in low-income communities for a decade.

The state Assembly's higher education committee unanimously advanced the measure on Monday.

Under the proposal, a physician would have to commit to working in a clinic in an area underserved by doctors, including working full-time in clinical care for four years.

The doctor would also have to live in New Jersey to qualify.

Some advocates say the program could help reduce a shortage of physicians in the state.

The bill would also provide $2 million to get the program started.

The bill now heads to the Assembly budget committee. It has not been taken up by the state Senate.
