The Assembly's Budget Committee will ask questions about Gov. Christie's plans for higher education spending during a hearing Wednesday.

Higher education is getting more scrutiny than usual this year, due to Christie's plan to reconfigure the state's higher education institutions.

Under his proposal, Rutgers would absorb parts of the University and Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

What's left of the medical university would be renamed the New Jersey Health Sciences University.

There's more controversy over the part of the plan that calls for Rutgers' Camden campus to be merged into Rowan University.

However, the merger may not be the only thing on lawmakers' minds. Faculty and staff at eight state colleges and universities are planning demonstrations Wednesday and Thursday to call for fair contracts.
