AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of regular gasoline in New Jersey on Friday was $3.43, down 6 cents from last week. But that's still much higher than the price from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.18.

However, it's not hard to find lower prices at many stations around New Jersey according to NewJerseyGasPrices.com which bases its survey on reports from drivers.

“Although 2012 will be the most expensive year on record for gas prices, AAA believes gas prices will continue to decline and motorists could actually pay the lowest gas prices of the year by New Year’s Eve,” said Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic. "However, there is a small chance that pump prices could rise or remain flat as a result of rising oil prices and other economic factors.”

Meanwhile, the national average price fell by 3 cents to $3.37. That's still higher than the national average from a year ago, which was $3.29.

Analysts say gas prices should continue to fall in New Jersey in the coming weeks as demand decreases and crude oil prices likely remain low.
