NJ Expanding Temporary Housing For Sandy Victims

The Christie administration has announced a new plan to expand temporary housing for the thousands of New Jersey residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy.

The plan includes making even greater use of Fort Monmouth, the former Army post in Monmouth County.

Forty-five units had been under renovation there for the displaced. Now an effort is under way to add as many as 375 units of permanent housing at the former Army post and to place temporary housing on concrete pads there.

With support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the state is also moving to place manufactured housing in mobile park parks.

In addition, the state is seeking to extend the time residents can stay in motels and hotels. It’s also adding Hudson and Bergen counties to its emergency home-repair program.

Over 9,500 New Jersey families sustained enough damage to need temporary housing.
