EAST WINDSOR — A Monroe Township bicyclist and former journalist, who once rode 100 miles to rise funds for multiple sclerosis, was killed Saturday after colliding with a motor vehicle in East Windsor.

Joseph Harvie, 36, was traveling south on Rt. 33 attempting to make a left turn near the Airport Road intersection, East Windsor Police said in a statement following a preliminary investigation. As Harvie began to turn, he entered the path of a red, 2000 Mercury Cougar that was also heading south on Rt. 33, resulting in the collision, according to police.

Following the crash, Harvie was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, where he later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The driver of the car was identified as Jake Hopfinger, 64, of Hightstown. Hopfinger was not injured in the crash. As of Sunday, no charges had been filed against the driver, according to police. Authorities say the crash is still under investigation.

Harvie worked as a public information officer for Monroe Township after previously working as a journalist for the Princeton Packet.

In 2013, Harvie posted on Facebook, asking for support as he prepared to bike 100 miles to raise money and awareness for MS. He said he participated in the annual event in honor of his cousin, who was diagnosed with MS.

Following the news of Harvie's death, several posts appeared on social media from people who worked with him or knew him from his presence in Monroe Township.

"Joseph Harvie was one of the most genuine, honest, humble, good-natured human beings I have ever met. I think anyone who was close with him would say he was a true friend," Jimmy Kastner wrote on Facebook. "He looked out for everyone and didn't let anything get him down. He was a guy you can sit down and have a real conversation and a beer with (and believe me I've shared many with him)."

The Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Company also posted a message stating: "MTFVC would like to send its deep condolences on the sudden loss of Joseph Harvie. Joe [was] an avid part of the Fire Dept taking pictures for our recruitment parties and other events. You will be deeply missed."
