Lower Township Police Chief William Mastriana tells Philly.com that one of his detectives received the news from family members about James and Evelyn McCarty.

The couple was injured last Thursday when their home exploded. Neighbors helped to pull them out of the rubble, and they were taken to a regional burn center.

Family members tell police that Evelyn McCarty is scheduled to have surgery on a broken leg.

Investigators say an old propane heating system could have played a role in the explosion.
