NJ Closing 2 State-Run Storm Shelters

New Jersey officials say they’re planning to close the last two state-run storm shelters this week as the number of people needing them after Superstorm Sandy has dwindled.

The Human Services Department says it will close the shelters at Monmouth Park in Oceanport and Arthur Brisbane Child Treatment Center in Wall this week.

The agency says it’s helping the 110 remaining residents find temporary or longer-term housing. Officials say most were struggling financially and were often homeless even before Sandy.

Three weeks ago, there were more than 7,000 people in formal shelters across the state. The state says that by Tuesday morning, besides the 110 at the two-state run shelters, there were 75 at county-run facilities in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
