Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow says former Plainfield resident Israel Romero was arrested Tuesday night when he tried to enter the United States from Mexico.

Authorities will seek to extradite Romero to New Jersey, where he faces four counts of sexual assault. His bail is set at $1.75 million.

Authorities believe Romero has been in Honduras since fleeing in June 2012 after he was accused of sexually assaulting the girl in his home.

When authorities went to arrest Romero, they learned he had fled. But they tracked Romero to a village in Honduras and worked with the U.S. Marshals Service to monitor his movements.
