NJ Bill Would Require Surveillance Notification

A New Jersey legislative committee has advanced a bill that would require out-of-state law enforcement to notify state officials if they plan on conducting surveillance in the state.

Assemblyman Charles Mainor says his bill was prompted by the New York Police Department’s surveillance of New Jersey Muslims and mosques.

New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa found that the NYPD operation did not violate any state laws. But he also reported that New York police had agreed to start meeting regularly with New Jersey law enforcement to discuss its counterterrorism operations. He has said the NYPD surveillance has ended.

The sponsor of the notification legislation is a Hudson County Democrat and Jersey City police officer.

The attorney general’s office says it is reviewing the bill, which now goes to the full Assembly.
