A New Jersey Senate panel has endorsed a bill that would allow witnesses of sexually violent crimes to be among those notified when the person responsible is released from custody.

The Law and Public Safety Committee on Thursday sent the measure to the full Senate.

Sponsor Loretta Weinberg says notification is necessary because some witnesses have become targets when offenders are released.

Victims of sex crimes or their families are already notified when a person convicted of a sexually violent offense is set free.

Under the new measure, notification would be extended to any witnesses of such crimes.
