NJ Beaches Clear of Debris

State officials say months of work by municipalities, volunteers and contractors has cleared Jersey Shore beaches of debris left behind by Superstorm Sandy. But heading into the holiday weekend, they caution that normal currents and wave action could uncover additional items.

Beachgoers who see any debris are being asked to immediately notify a lifeguard, or if no lifeguard is available, local police or health officials.

State officials say aircraft will fly over the coastline all season to search for any major debris that may have been missed. They say contractors are also using sonar to check the water.

Municipalities are making safety sweeps before beach openings. They’re also being encouraged by the state to conduct additional inspections each day.
