New Jersey is swinging for the fences in its last ditch effort to overturn a federal ban on sports betting in all but four states.

The state is appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking it to overturn a law limiting sports betting to states that legalized it before a 1991 deadline -- Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana.

New Jersey says the law is unconstitutional because it treats states differently, among other legal arguments.

But those efforts have lost at every step in the legal process, most recently when a federal appeals panel ruled against New Jersey.

The state is suing the four major professional sports leagues, which support the existing ban.

The leagues say the perception of the games' integrity might be compromised by state-sanctioned betting on them.
