A legislative panel has approved a resolution that calls on the Christie administration to change or withdraw rules allowing environmental waivers for businesses.

The Assembly's Environment Committee voted 5-2 Monday for the measure. It was approved by a Senate environment panel last week on a 3-1 vote.

If approved by the full Legislature, the administration would have 30 days to change or withdraw the rules. If it doesn't, the Legislature could pass another resolution to scrap them entirely.

The state Department of Environmental Protection in March proposed the rules, which would take effect Aug. 1. Businesses must prove there is a public emergency, conflicting rules, environmental benefit or undue hardship to receive a waiver.

Environmental and labor groups voiced support for the resolution. But several business groups opposed it.
