Newark police seek prisoner who fled from hospital room

 NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Newark police are pursuing a prisoner who escaped from a guarded hospital room.

Elijah Shabazz had been admitted to University Hospital under police guard after complaining of chest pains.

A hospital spokeswoman says the hospital was put in lockdown after police and doctors discovered the 46-year-old Shabazz wasn't in his room shortly after 11 a.m. Only patients entering the hospital for treatment were allowed in.

Police were still searching for Shabazz by md-afternoon. But hospital spokeswoman Stacie Newton says the lockdown was lifted at 1:45 p.m.

Shabazz was being held on robbery, burglary and resisting arrest charges.
