Police responding to a suspicious person call in the area of Freylinghuysen Avenue and Whittier Place encountered 19-year-old Marvin Coleman around 7:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Acting County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says Coleman began struggling with the officers as they were trying to arrest him. She said Coleman allegedly took out a firearm and assaulted an officer, and Coleman was shot by at least one of the officers.

Coleman was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Further details on his injuries, including how many times he was shot and where he was struck, were not disclosed.

The officers' names were not disclosed.
