New Jersey's largest city is celebrating a birthday this weekend.

Newark is marking its 175th anniversary as an incorporated city. First founded by Puritans in 1666, Newark was incorporated as a city in 1836.

The city of about 280,000 residents has gone through cycles of prosperity, decline and rebirth.

Mayor Cory Booker says the city's history, like other old American cities, shows it is tenacious, complicated and resilient.

Booker plans to mark the occasion by attending an event at the Newark Museum on Saturday.

Newark, about eight miles west of New York, boasts a major transportation hub, an international airport and the largest shipping port on the East Coast.
