Officials toured the 152-panel installation located on top of an AirTrain electrical substation on Thursday. A second installation is finished and two more are underway. They're located on two maintenance buildings and a cargo building at the airport.

The Port Authority estimates the four installations will supply the airport with about 817,000 kilowatt-hours per year, or the equivalent of powering 62 homes with electricity or removing 90 vehicles from the road. They're projected to save about $60,000 annually on electricity.

Newark is the first of the Port Authority's airports to receive solar installations. The agency operates JFK, LaGuardia, Stewart, Teterboro and Atlantic City airports.
