Those with firearms now reclassified as assault weapons are supposed to start registering them today. The state's gun owners are also required to limit the ammunition in magazines to seven bullets except at competitions or firing ranges.

The state affiliate of the National Rifle Association plans to go to court Monday trying to block the magazine limit. It also has a federal lawsuit pending.

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association says the law violates the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens "to keep commonly possessed firearms."

Association president Tom King says they are advising members to obey the law until it's proven unconstitutional.

State Police plan to post forms online for new gun registrations, required by Aug. 15, 2014.
