New Red Sox Manager Stokes Rivalry with Yankees

It didn’t take long for Bobby Valentine to start to stir it up as new manager of the Boston Red Sox.

Speaking Wednesday at the winter meetings, the former New York Mets skipper was asked whether he would talk about his rivalry with the New York Yankees.

“No, I hate the Yankees. I don’t want to waste this valuable time talking about the Yankees. This is too valuable,” a smiling Valentine said to laughter. “I told Joe Girardi I used to love them, but now I hate them.”

Girardi, the Yankees’ manager, will face Valentine for the first time during the regular season on April 20 in Boston — the 100th anniversary of the first game at Fenway Park.

“Bobby is going to be probably a little bit different type of manager than Terry was because every manager is going to have a different philosophy than the last guy,” Girardi said. “A lot of your moves as a manager are dependent on what type of players you have. If you’ve got a bunch of guys that hit the ball out of the ballpark and are slow to first base, you’re not all of a sudden going to become a base-stealing team. So you have to look at the lineup. But time will tell how he’s going to manage that club, and it’s our job to pay attention.”
