Wind gusts to 40 mph remain possible through Tuesday morning, with sunny weather and a warmup in the forecast for the Garden State over the next few days.

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, March 29, 2016...

Still Blustery

Feeling a bit windswept, New Jersey? Ferocious winds have been howling since Monday afternoon. Top wind gusts so far have been 58 mph at High Point and at Newark Airport, with many other locations seeing 50+ mph wind gusts. That's strong enough to cause minor damage (such as detached shingles) and to cause garbage cans and lawn furniture to soar through the air.

Winds will be more manageable during the day Tuesday, slowly subsiding through the afternoon and calming considerably by evening. West-northwest sustained winds will range from about 15 to 25 mph, with regular gusts to 40 mph. Amidst the blustery weather, skies will be bright and sunny for Tuesday. While temperatures on Tuesday (mid 50s) will be cooler than Monday (near 70 in South Jersey), we'll end up near-normal for late March.

A Wind Advisory continues until 6 p.m. for the northeast corner of New Jersey: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties.

Quiet and Dry

As winds calm down Tuesday night, the effects of this relatively cool air mass will become apparent. Radiational cooling will allow thermometers to dip below the freezing mark by Wednesday morning for most of the Garden State. (Forecast lows are 26 to 33 degrees.) Ice won't be an issue, since yesterday's rain puddles have already evaporated. But if you've done any early-season gardening of tender, sensitive plants, it'll be another night to cover-up or bring 'em inside.

Wednesday looks very nice, especially considering the lighter winds and abundant sunshine. High temperatures will reach the pleasant upper 50s for most of the state. The exception will be the Jersey Shore, as lighter winds allow the sea breeze to keep coastal communities a bit cooler (lower 50s or so). We'll stay dry for Wednesday, but a few clouds could dampen the sunshine by the afternoon.

Thursday is expected to start off with nice weather, with increasing clouds, increasing winds (gusts to 40 mph), and increasing temperatures (highs near 70).

Next Storm System

By Thursday late afternoon, our next storm system comes into view. This system looks to deliver some rain as we close out the record books on March (Thursday) and begin the month of April (Friday).

First raindrops will probably occur after about 5 p.m. Thursday, with showers and even a few thunderstorms continuing through at least Friday morning. The GFS model does paint Friday as a pretty wet day with scattered rain through the afternoon. But I'm not ready to call it a "washout" just yet.

Friday should stay warm, in the upper 60s, before cooler air arrives. Temperatures for the first weekend of April will pop below-normal for a time. Our latest forecast calls for highs in the 50s on Saturday and only 40s on Sunday.
