After two days of frigid temperatures and ferocious wind chills, the weather in the Garden State will turn a bit warmer and also a bit wetter through this weekend.

Here are your weather headlines for Wednesday, January 6, 2016...

Not as Windy, Not as Cold

It's another very cold start to the day for New Jersey, with teens and single digits dominating the temperature map this morning. However, even though we are right around or even cooler than yesterday, it is markedly more comfortable outside this morning! You can thank the calm wind for the more bearable conditions... It really does make a difference! I have no problem not talking about that fierce, painful wind chill all morning long.

Furthermore, winds will shift form northerly to southwesterly, and that will help to start a slow warmup this afternoon. Under mostly sunny skies, temperatures should be allowed to climb to the upper 30s to lower 40s today. That is close to seasonal normals for early January. (Today's normal highs: 39 at Newark and Trenton, and 42 at Atlantic City.)

Tonight will be chilly once again, but not quite as frigid as the past couple of mornings. Lows will fall to as low as 12 degrees in far North Jersey, with lower 20s through the rest of the state. Winds will stay light, so once again wind chills will be a non-factor in tonight's forecast.

Next Storm System

The NAM model shows an off-shore storm system will "spit" some showers toward the Jersey Shore on Thursday. I don't completely buy the raindrops, but I did include a rain shower chance just in case. Otherwise, Thursday should be a mostly to partly sunny day, with relatively mild temperatures in the lower to mid 40s.

Clouds will continue to increase on Friday, and temperatures will continue to warm. We'll close out the workweek with highs in the mid to upper 40s.

Our next storm system is still scheduled to arrive Friday evening through early Saturday morning. However, this morning's forecast model suite has dramatically fizzled the spread and intensity of precipitation from this system. So our current forecast is for showers between about 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday... These showers will be almost exclusively rain for New Jersey, as Saturday morning's lows will be around 40 degrees. But with temperatures falling to the 30s in far North Jersey (above I-80), I can't rule out some sleet and/or freezing rain mixing in.

Warmer, Wetter Weekend

After the showers clear out, Saturday becomes a mostly cloudy, breezy day. Our warming trend will continue, with highs ranging from the mid 40s in North Jersey, near 50 degrees in Central Jersey, and mid 50s in South Jersey. Not bad at all for early January!

Sunday gets even warmer, with highs potentially approaching 60 degrees in the southern part of New Jersey! The warmth comes at a cost, unfortunately... Another stronger storm system arrives by the time you wake up on Sunday. Again, with the warm temperatures, it's going to be all rain. And that rain could be steady to heavy at times, especially during the Sunday morning hours.

Temperatures should take another dive for early next week, with highs returning to the 30s. Snow-lovers, keep an eye on Tuesday into Wednesday. Both the GFS and European models show a weak clipper system swinging through New Jersey during that time frame. Don't hold your breath just yet... But could next week finally bring our first widespread dusting of snow of the season?
