New Jersey lawmakers consider tougher rules for nail salons

TRENTON (AP) — Two New Jersey lawmakers say they're introducing a bill to protect workers in nail salons.

The bill being proposed by two Republican state senators would require random inspections of salons, which would be required to have proper ventilation. Workers would be required to wear gloves, face masks and goggles when working with dangerous substances such as formaldehyde and acetone-based nail polish removers.

Employees would also be made aware of their rights to fair wages.

Salons have been the subject of some recent investigative reporting, including on NJ.com, which New Jersey workers were found to make less than $35 a day sometimes.

New York has a new law intended to protect workers at salons.

Sens. Diane Allen and Tom Kean said Friday they would introduced the New Jersey legislation.
