Police Say Missing Clark Girl is a Runaway – Tweet Was a Hoax

A Clark girl is still missing after she sent out a chilling tweet begging for help.

UPDATE 10/1/12 – 12:39 p.m.: After word of Kara Alongi’s disappearance went viral on Twitter, media outlets were stationed in front of the missing teen’s house this morning. While she is still missing, police are now classifying this case as a ‘runaway’ and says the criptic tweet for help she sent out was bogus.

Police found that someone called a local taxi company asking for a car at Alongi’s address around the same time as the tweet, and a cab driver confirmed that he dropped off a person matching the girl’s description at the Rahway train station.

It is not clear whether she got on a train, police said. She left her cell phone at home.

Alongi’s tweet went viral overnight, with thousands of messages about Alongi’s reported disappearance and efforts like the hashtag #helpfindkaratrending nationally on the site. Alongi now has close to 100,000  Twitter followers.

Clark police were flooded with an estimated 6,000 phone calls after Alongi’s tweet spread across the internet.

Anyone with information about Alongi’s whereabouts is asked to call Clark police or send an anonymous tip to Union County Crime Stoppers at 908-654-TIPS, www.uctip.org or text UCTIP plus a message to 274637.

UPDATE: A photo of Kara’s Twitter feed was posted at 12:55am Monday with a new message:

The tweet has since been deleted and there has been no official word on her whereabouts.

At 2:00 a.m., New Jersey 101.5 placed a call to the Clark Police Department. The officer would not comment on the situation and transfered the call to Chief Scherb’s voicemail.

PREVIOUS REPORT:

Clark Police are searching the area and talking to friends of Alongi but so far have not located her. A county canine unit has been called to assist in the search.

Alongi’s family, friends and neighbors were camped outside her home while Clark PD and the Sheriff’s Office photographed the home and the area. A Sheriff’s Office canine unit was also at the home. Alongi’s grandmother, Toni Alongi, describes her as respectful, sensitive, says it is not like her to run away.

Clark PD has issued the following Amber Alert:

At 6:12pm the missing, Kara Alongi stated on Twitter that ‘There is someone in my hour ecall 911.’ Indications of a break-in reported present at the scene. Missing was home alone. Again, missing is Kara Alongi. 5ft3in aprox 105lbs. Blonde hair, hazel eyes. Last seen wearing a blue Aurthur L. Johnson HS (ALJ) sweatshirt

Clark Police Chief Alan Scherb said:

We still don’t know whether she ran away or if there was any foul play. There are no obvious signs of a break-in and the home was not ransacked. The door was open. Kara, if you see this, please contact your parents or Clark Police. You will not be in trouble. We are concerned for your safety.

Scherb says the canine unit picked up her scent and walked the neighborhood but was broken off after not finding a further trail.

Scherb would not confirm whether or not Alongi’s phone was found in the home.

Scherb says the Sheriff’s Department is photographing the area, as is procedure. Police are talking to Alongi’s friends and investigating all leads. Those with any information should call Clark Police at 732-388-3434.
