The state board of medical examiners announced Thursday that Dr. Amgad Hessein's license has been revoked while he awaits trial on charges he submitted more than $1.5 million in fake Medicare and private health care claims.

A lawsuit from Hessein claiming the investigation was conducted in bad faith after he reported problems was dismissed. A working phone number couldn't immediately be located.

Hessein owned Advanced Pain Management Specialists in Newark, Union, Belleville and South Orange.

Investigators say he refilled pain medication prescriptions without justification and failed to monitor vital signs of sedated patients.

He was ordered to pay a $130,000 penalty and reimburse the state $308,750 for its investigation.
