New Jersey Death Penalty Repeal – Quotes of the Day

Attributed to former Governor Jon Corzine December 17th, 2007:

“Today, New Jersey is truly evolving,” Corzine said. I believe society must first determine if its endorsement of violence begets violence and undermines the sanctity of life. … I answer “Yes,” and therefore I believe we must evolve to ending that endorsement.”

And this, attributed to then Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo on the day of the signing:

“The rest of America, and for that matter the entire world, is watching what we are doing here today,” ”New Jersey is setting a precedent that I’m confident other states will follow.”

Comforting words, I’m sure, to the family of Officer Christopher Matloz, and to the thousands each day that put their lives on the line for us.
