New Framework in Place For Rutgers-Camden Shift, Says Official
A Rutgers University official says a new framework is in place for Rutgers University to keep its campus in Camden.
Rutgers Vice President of Public Affairs Peter McDonough tells The Star-Ledger that Rutgers would oversee how degrees are awarded and other academic issues, but would not run the day-to-day operations in Camden.
The plan is an alternative to one Gov. Chris Christie has backed to merge Rutgers' Camden campus into Rowan University. Rutgers-Camden students, faculty and alumni mostly oppose the merger.
Christie has not signed off on the new plan, which was created by lawmakers and education officials.
Democratic powerbroker George Norcross, who is pushing to create a research university in southern New Jersey, told The Associated Press on Monday night that no agreement is in place.
