The man behind the wheel of the taxi cab taking John and Alicia Nash from Newark Liberty Airport to their Princeton Junction home had only been driving for two weeks.

Tarek Girgis of Elizabeth veered across the car lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike just south of exit 8A in Jamesburg on Saturday, according to New Jersey State Police, when he hit the guard rail.

The 2007 Ford Crown Victoria then hit a car in the center lane and eventually both cars wound up in the left lane up against the concrete barrier, ejecting the Nash's onto the roadway.

State Police said their preliminary finding indicates that the couple was not wearing seat belts.

Girgis' 19-year-old son, Kerolos, told the New York Post that Tarek had only been driving a cab for two weeks.

“He started a new company . . . I drive the ice cream truck now,” he told the newspaper.

A spokesman for the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office tells NJ.com that no charges are expected to be filed in the case.

John, 86, and Alicia, 82, returned home from Norway with New York University professor Louis Nirenberg five-hours earlier than expected after switching flights. Nirenberg’s daughter, Lisa Macbride, suggested that they take a taxi home rather than wait 5 hours for the limo they had arranged for.

During Monday's Memorial Day service, West Windsor mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh announced that a park will be named after the Nobel Prize winning mathematician.

"We are very proud of him and his accomplishments," the mayor said, adding that he had approached John several months ago with the idea.

"He said 'Mayor, I appreciate that, but I am still alive," recalled Hsueh, who told him that you can still be honored while alive.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
