Gabriela Mosquera has been sworn in as the newest member of the New Jersey Assembly.

The Democrat took the oath of office Monday, assuming the 4th Legislative District seat she thought she had won in November.

But her Republican challenger soon filed a lawsuit, claiming Mosquera -- a Gloucester Township resident -- had not lived in the district for at least 12 months, as required by state law. The case then went through several state and federal courts until a divided New Jersey Supreme Court tossed the election results last month.

But the justices also determined that Mosquera could be appointed to hold the seat until a special election in November. And Democratic County committee members in Camden and Gloucester
counties did that during a special meeting on Wednesday.
