About 1.3 million New Jerseyans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. That's an increase of 4 percent over those who traveled July 4, 2011.

"Many folks plan to incorporate this past weekend and/or next weekend into their trip, so they're planning an extended holiday since the fourth falls right smack in the middle of the week," said Tracy Noble, AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson. "About 84 percent of those traveling are going by automobile, which is 1.1 million travelers, a 3.2 percent increase from last year."

Seven percent of travelers are going by air, while 9 percent are going by train, bus or another mode of transportation. That's an increase of 8.9 percent and 9.1 percent, respectively.

"AAA's projection for a high number of Independence Day travelers is being fed by Americans' appetite for travel and lower gas prices. We've seen gas prices decrease for about ten weeks straight at this point, so people just want to go," said Noble.

Motorists will find the average price of gas at $3.30 per gallon in New Jersey, $3.63 in New York, $3.36 in Pennsylvania and $3.35 in Delaware.
