New Jersey will see one shot of relief from the heat and humidity this week.

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, July 28, 2015...

Long Stretch of Hot, Humid Weather

Last week, I told you to enjoy the seasonable, comfortable temperatures in the 80s while they lasted. This week - all week - temperatures around 90° and high humidity will plague New Jersey. Hopefully you have a nice, cool place to hang out, or else you might melt in this heat!

Tuesday will feature hazy sunshine, with a few puffy cumulus clouds popping up this afternoon. Inland, temperatures will climb to the 86° to 92° range. At the Jersey Shore, temperatures will be a little bit cooler, around 80°. With dew points now approaching 70°, the humidity will be pretty uncomfortable today. Additionally, ground-level ozone levels will be elevated today, prompting the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to issue an Air Quality Alert for most of the state. (Excepting Sussex, Warren, Atlantic, and Cape May counties.)

Wednesday looks even hotter with many thermometers bumping into the mid 90s during the afternoon. Add in the humidity, and the heat index ("feels like" or "apparent" temperature) will climb to the upper 90s to near 100°.

Thursday will be very warm and humid as well, although a few clouds and eventual rain will make it a bit more tolerable than Wednesday. Thursday's highs should range from the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Thunderstorms

This afternoon, a sea breeze is expected to set up, keeping New Jersey's coastal communities a bit cooler than inland areas. However, as is often the case in the summer, that sea breeze front (i.e. the line between the cool marine air and the hot land air) could spawn some isolated showers and thunderstorms. The best timing for the rain today will be in the afternoon, and those showers and storms will likely be limited to central and southern New Jersey. I don't expect any widespread or significant severe weather today, although a few heavy downpours and/or strong wind gusts will be possible.

Our next chance for rain comes Thursday afternoon, ahead of an approaching cold front. Right now, the models show a swath of strong thunderstorms pushing through New Jersey between about 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Thursday. For now, I'll say that periods of torrential rain and potentially damaging winds will be possible from this line of storms... Beyond that timing and intensity forecast, we'll have to get a little closer to better pinpoint what's going to happen.

Any Relief?

The aforementioned cold front will push across New Jersey early Friday morning. Unfortunately, there won't be a nice pool of "cool" air waiting for us behind the front. Our forecast reflects that we'll likely cool off a few degrees for Friday, returning highs to the seasonable mid to upper 80s for highs. More importantly, Friday's new air mass will be significantly drier - that will mean lower dew points, and therefore lower humidity and more comfortable conditions.

The early look at next weekend is very summerlike... High temperatures will be about 90° or better across most of the state for both Saturday and Sunday. Again, humidity will be manageable. And a stiff breeze will keep the air moving (especially on Saturday). Confidence is growing that we'll have yet another great beach and pool weekend!
