How safe of a driver are you?  Now, you have a chance to prove it and earn a discount on your car insurance at the same time.  Allstate New Jersey has introduced a usage-based product called Drive Wise® which measures information like mileage, braking, speed and time of day when a customer is driving.  Using that data, the company calculates a discount for each customer using its telematics technology.

Customers who sign up for and use the device automatically receive a 15 percent enrollment discount.  After the first six months of use, the enrollment discount is replaced with a performance discount based on driving habits.  Rates won't go up based on driving scores, but savings of up to 30 percent can be earned.

"This has been referred to as pay-as-you-drive insurance, but this is truly a pay-how-you-drive program," said Rich Crist, president of Allstate New Jersey.  "Our goal is to create a safer, more self-aware driver and, in doing so, we are able to pass along a significant discount for safer driving."

So far, more than 150 million miles have been recorded to help identify the safer driving habits of customers.

"Our early experience with Drive Wise® indicates telematics technology has the potential to save lives, reduce injuries and save millions of dollars in property damage each year," said Crist.

Drive Wise® plugs into the on-board diagnostic port found under the dashboard/steering column on most cars (1996 model year and later) and tracks driving behavior.  Find more information here.
