Mitt Romney headlines Christie birthday fundraiser
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Former Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is drawing a sharp contrast between New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and President Barack Obama.
Speaking at a New Jersey fundraiser Wednesday night in honor of Christie's 52nd birthday, Romney is deriding the president as someone who doesn't know what he's doing.
Romney says the potential 2016 contender is someone who does.
Christie is returning the favor by saying the country would be far better off if Romney were president today.
Christie supported Romney when he ran in 2012. Romney has repeatedly insisted he's not pursuing the White House in 2016, but speculation remains.
Proceeds for the fundraiser will benefit the state Republican Party. A spokeswoman says the event is on track to raise $600,000.
The governor's birthday was last Saturday.
