Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced Tuesday that 39-year-old Lisa Ayers of Mine Hill was charged with theft by unlawful. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Authorities say Ayers embezzled more than $75,000 between November 2010 and January 2012. They say she cashed checks that she wrote from the Mine Hill Fire Department's bank account and wrote other checks to pay her expenses, including her home and car loans.

Ayers was released on her own recognizance, and a phone number for her could not be located Tuesday.

State authorities did not know if she had retained a lawyer.
