A northern New Jersey police officer escaped serious injury when the sport utility vehicle he was driving overturned, briefly trapping him inside.

Milltown Sgt. Donald Petry was on duty in the Middlesex County community when the crash occurred around 10:10 a.m. Monday. The cause of the accident was under investigation, but authorities say no other vehicles were involved.

Firefighters responded and soon extricated the 46-year-old officer from the department-owned SUV. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries and later released.

Petry has served with the Milltown police force for 24 years.
