What do you think of the idea of teachers being able to earn merit pay for doing a good job? I personally love it and they’re working on such a plan in Newark.

Should NJ teachers have merit pay?

Under the plan, which has never been done in New Jersey, teachers would be involved in an evaluation process that would financially reward those who are highly rated. Teachers evaluated as “highly effective" and “effective” would receive bonuses in addition to the annual increases that are tied to experience. Those rated in the lower catagories of course would not receive extra pay.

So where would the money come from? Newark Teachers Union president Joe Del Grasso sayss the bonuses would come from “philanthropic sources” possibly the $100 million donated by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.  Governor Christie favors merit pay for teachers and frequently discusses it at town hall forums.
