Chi (pronounced "SHY") Coltrane was born in Racine, Wisconsin on November 16, 1948.

Her mother was Canadian, and her dad was a German violinist.

One of 7 kids, Chi played several instruments!

She gave her first piano recital at the age of 12.

The year 1970 found Chi in a band, playing jazz, funk & rock in Chicago bars and clubs.

The following year, she represented the U.S. in Rio de Janeiro, at the "International Rock Festival." Chi then found herself appearing on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" and "The Midnight Special."

Chi Coltrane's first hit, "Thunder And Lightning," was released in May 1972. By August, it hit #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 (#18 in Canada, #4 in Germany). The album "Chi Coltrane" stayed on the album charts for 3 months.

1974 brought the "Let It Ride" album. Chi put out Greatest Hits/Best Of albums in 1975. "Road To Tomorrow" followed in 1977, and the "Silk & Steel" album in 1981.

Chi Coltrane moved to Europe...where she was voted "Best Female Artist" 2 years in a row. She released several albums in Europe through the 1980's and early 90's.

On the European "100 Best Musicians Of The Century" list, Chi landed in the top 50.

Chi Coltrane returned to Los Angeles in 1993.

She built a recording studio...and turned her attention to working with the underprivileged.

Chi resumed her music career in 2009.

She released a new "Best Of" CD entitled: "The Essential Chi Coltrane-Yesterday, Today & Forever."

The new collection showcases material from several of her 1980's albums. PLUS 3 new songs.

She followed up the album with a European comeback tour. Her first appearance, in Vienna, drew 100,000 people!

Subsequently, Chi Coltrane signed with Sony Records, and has toured Holland, Germany and Switzerland.

Several sources state that Chi has been working on a studio album of new songs.
