Legislation to create a statewide plan to address youth suicide prevention awaits Governor Chris Christie’s signature.

Under the measure sponsored by Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen), a statewide youth suicide prevention plan would be developed and adopted within 180 days of the bill’s enactment.  The Commissioner of Children and Families, The Commissioner of Health and Senior Services and the New Jersey Youth Suicide Prevention Advisory Council would collaborate on the plan together.

“This is about protecting our children from themselves by ensuring that we have the necessary resources readily available for young people and their families to access in a time of crisis,” said Vainieri Huttle.

The measure (A-3659) was approved 75-0 by the full Assembly earlier this year.  Last week, the state Senate approved the measure 36-0.
