An 18-year-old from Marlboro died in a crash on Route 9 in Old Bridge on Friday morning.

Old Bridge Police Captain Steven Daroci said Adam J. Rarela was a passenger in a box truck trying to change lanes and rear ended a dump truck when the light turned green at Old Mill Road around 7:15 a.m.

Rarela was a passenger in the box truck driven by Anthony J. Depompa, 29, of Laurence Harbor, making a delivery for Amazing Amusements of Marlboro, according to Daroci.

Daroci said Rarela was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the dump truck, Henry McCawley, 65, of East Brunswick and Depompa were hospitalized at Raritan Bay Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

According to his Facebook page, he was a graduate of Marlboro High School and was starting classes at Kean University in September. He was drummer for the band My Lonely Heart.

Two of three lanes were closed for clean up of the crash, creating miles-long backups on Route 9 back to Freehold.
