The survey from the website, RetailMeNot.com, shows 87 percent of school teachers are paying for classroom supplies out of their own packets.

"Teachers are spending upwards of $150 of their own money," Spokeswoman Trae Bodge says. "In fact, 75 percent of teachers are cutting back on things that they enjoy in their personal time."

The survey revealed the out-of-pocket spending is highest in the west, where more than 80 percent of teachers reported forking over funds to help their class. Four in 10 say they have asked parents to help pay for supplies.

It seems arts and performing arts funding saw the biggest cutbacks, and teachers spent the most in those endeavors to make up the gap, according to the survey.

Sixty-seven percent of teachers in the survey report their school has cut out or taken funds away from at least one subject in the past three years.
