Man’s hand blown off in mysterious home explosion

An explosion in a Hudson County apartment Thursday night caused a man to lose part of his hand — but what caused it remains a mystery.

NBC 4 New York reported a 50-year-old man staggered out of an apartment on Kennedy Boulevard in Guttenburg after the explosion.

"He blew part of his hand off, mostly his fingers," Guttenberg Police Director Joel Magenheimer told the station.

A hazardous material crew and the bomb squad were called to the scene and found nothing but debris. Mangenheimer told the station it wasn't clear what the the man may have been doing and speculated he may have been using fireworks, but police believe the incident was not terror-related.
