NJ teen critical following single car crash, police say
MANCHESTER — Shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday evening, police responded to Route 530 near the intersection of St. John Place in the Whiting section to a single car crash where a teenage girl suffered serious injuries.
A 2006 White Nissan Altima hit a tree off-road, injuring the driver who was the lone individual inside the car and may have fallen asleep at the wheel, according to police.
The car was heading eastbound when it veered across the center part of the road into the oncoming lane before crashing into the tree, a witness told investigators.
The 17-year-old girl, who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, was transported via medivac helicopter to Jersey Shore Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
The official cause of the crash remains under investigation.
